Some new stock for the shop
« on: June 15, 2016, 10:33:51 AM »
I do get a bit frustrated when I'm working on the more basic commissions, so I've spared a few hours in the last couple of days to just have a bit of fun making things to put on the shelf.

First off is a lidded pot strongly influenced by the work of Kurt Fuller, who does this pot-bellied shape so well. It's a 4"x4" piece of walnut with a sycamore lid (...well, it did have sycamore, but I found a nasty little wormhole in it, so I used a piece of ash instead)....

...next, a couple of oak bowls. There's been a few examples lately of ebonising and scorching, the latter of which I really enjoy doing, so here's 2 oak bowls that have scorched areas and lime waxed afterwards.
This one's about 8" diameter...

...and this one a little smaller, 7 1/2", if I recall correctly...

...next, a brown oak platter. This was a blank that I'd cut from the edge of a 1 1/2" board, but one edge of the blank curled upwards whilst the rest was flat, so I barely managed to get a 1" thick finished platter out of it, hence the very shallow curve on it - just enough to stop fruit rolling away! It's 12" diameter and is finished with microcrystaline wax.

...and finally, a piece of pure fun. A little 'ort' bowl  from a piece of spalted sycamore branchwood, barely 3" diameter.

C&C always welcome....Les

yes...believe it or not, I know the difference....the sycamore was found to have a little worm-hole, so I substituted a piece of ash but neglected to change the text

Who's been a busy boy then.

I do like the first bowl, the finial on the lid is something completely different to anything I've seen before.

Though I've no idea what an 'ort' bowl is.

Another for liking the first one even though it is quite wide compared to the height the curves just make it work and like the flat on the finial to bring the top in line with the rim.

.... I've no idea what an 'ort' bowl is.
An ort is a scrap, or leftover piece of thread which has been snipped off during the making of tapestry/needlepoint etc. Traditionally, groups of ladies would sit together to sew/embroider and there could be quite a mess if they didn't have an ort bowl. I guess my workshop equivalent, when I'm turning a batch of items using a chuck, is the little parted-off tenon which gets ejected from the chuck and thrown into a cardboard box under the lathe.

Les,

you've got to love that explanation. And strange things like that are 'must haves' for a certain type of people.

I personally like the first item the most. I just love boxes, and this one is just right.

why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?
