Burr Oak Bowl
« on: June 26, 2016, 09:50:59 PM »
Burr Oak Bowl with some colour :)

16" x 5 1/2" outside is coloured with water based dye, rim has had the bark removed and coated in gold gilt cream and the centre finished with lemon oil. The burr was still green so it should shrink giving a different effect.

c & c's welcome

All the best

I like it Ed but would have liked it better if it was thinner. I expect you wanted to show as much burr as possible but for me it is too chunky

Hi George

It was a toss-up between thinner and keeping the rim so I kept the rim wider for the effect of the gold, but I must admit I was think a bit thinner.

Thanks

Ed

That's quite a combination of colour and texture....and they all work well together.
Nice one, Ed.

Ed,

I love this in all aspects, the gilding of the natural edge burr came as a surprise when I opened up the pictures.

Sorry, this is not for me, the wood is gorgeous so why the need to colour? if we all liked the same thing life would be boring though LOL.

The Gold is very Striking and goes well ...  but from a purely personal point of view the bold Blue
does not do it any favours .Sowee :( :(

But after saying that .... if you don`t try anything different you wont get anything different.

I like colour too but in this instance, I'm not sure it adds anything. Looking at the bowl rim, it varies in thickness, which looks odd. If the wall thickness was more consistent, the rim would be too. I don't have a problem with thicker walled, chunky bowls. With the right bowl, chunky works so I'm not saying it has to be thin!

Thanks for your comments Tony,Di & Paul

I just thought that I'd try something a bit different and see what comments were made. Paul I can see what your saying about the wall thickness from the photo it dos=es look a little uneven but in real life the wall thickness is even so when you are looking down on the piece the band of gold is even.

Well, in contrast to most other people, I do like this a lot. I like the blue, and the gold, and the contrast between the colours and the burr inside. I think I would have preferred it a little thinner, maybe about a third less. This would still give a decent band of gold around the rim, but make it look less chunky. But overall I think this is a glorious piece.

Thanks Fuzzy

I've been thinking about the thickness and might re-mount it but not sure  :)
