Nautilus reflections
« on: November 01, 2016, 08:03:25 PM »

This post shows 4 panels mounted on an easel. Each sycamore panel is approximately 222 x 143 x 21 mm and contains a Fibonacci-based spiral of mini-bowls. Mini-bowl size progression is approximately linear rather than following a logarithmic expansion.
Firstly it shows how much more comfortable the logarithmic spiral (base phi - the Fibonacci spiral) looks contained within a so-called golden rectangle than within a circular disc as shown in my 1st post of this series.

The whole reflects the 2 themes I have been exploring this year ...Reflections (mirror images) and Spirals and is the last in this series of posts.

The title uses some artistic licence because the so-called Nautilus spiral, while very similar is different from Fibonacci's spiral
If asked I will happily explain the method.

C&C Welcomed
Regards Nick

What a lovely image this set of four makes.
Nick....your current work reminds me of that of Mike Foster, who shows his work on Woodturners Unlimited. He uses mathematical influences in most of his turnings.

If it had a frame to hold it, I can see someone owning this and regularly changing the order of the boards around to create different effects, not just the reflections Axis of symmetry you're displaying here.

it would make a very interesting kinetic art piece.

I like this piece or should I call it pieces. I like the thought that has gone into this by using what has been around for some time

Always pleasing to see ideas taken beyond there limits..... to us the geometry is spot on.... Very clean and neat.

it would make a very interesting kinetic art piece.

I originally thought of a frame but the easel allowed for greater freedom of movement / interchange and did not challenge my woodworking skills ;D ;D ;D
Other formats include

etc.etc.etc.

Thank you all for your comments

I like the top right image. I saw the options for moving the panels around, but not the way they are lit. The occluded Moon's effect is brilliant.
