Lime wip
« on: February 02, 2017, 10:01:41 AM »
A couple of people mentioned on Gary's thread that lime is lousy to turn and whilst I agree it does have its uses. This is a goblet that I am making and I turned it and then sand carved (sounds better put like that LOL) to a really smooth finish then passed over to Mo to decorate. She is using a mixture of pyrography to outline the pattern then indian ink to colour. Just waiting for delivery of some gold to finish. As the lime is both soft and very pale it takes the ink well and as long as you leave it for a few days to really dry (the ink)  lacquering afterwrd doesn't make the ink run. Even lime has its uses.

lime wood is lovely to turn, just a bit on the plain side that's all.

i think it's a bit like other softer hardwoods that on occasion you can get very soft bits and i know from turning horse chestnut that i thought this was rubbish but when given some normal stuff it was harder than the original block i had and turned very nicely.

nice work by the way pete. the design look very indian to me.

I'm on the 'don't like' side of turning lime. however as you've discovered it is great for carving and the like. Years gone by, wood block prints were carved into Lime as it can take high detail and is easy to work.

The decoration work showing has an Indian feel to it, looking forward to seeing the final piece.

I think she has used various indian style patterns to do it. She is a clever lady....don't tell her I said so though LOL.
