Another mystery wood!
« on: February 03, 2017, 08:35:27 PM »
I arrived home recently only to find some branch wood on the drive. After some detective work I traced the culprit! At first I though it was pine, but after closer inspection I believe it to be Hawthorn. Can anyone confirm this? and what is it like to turn/
it is nearly as wet as the North sea at present, but I did cut a slice to see in side, it appears to be white, where other bits of hawthorn I have had were a light fawn colour. Does hawthorn react to the light?
I finally resized a picture, so here it is
Thanks
Ron

I can't get the picture, either. Hawthorn is virtually white when it's fresh, but does discolour and go slightly straw coloured. It's a joy to turn because it's so slow growing, so has a tight grain and finishes well, but like so many close-grained woods, it has a tendency to split quite badly.

As my dog shows no interest in it I assume that it is not dogwood! Thanks for the other replies, I am sure now that it is Hawthorn, so I had better get the ends waxed

Ron,Hawthorn is lovey to turn, some of it stays pale once turned and some goes an orangybrown colour even off the same branch,I get it off a friend on a regular basis when he does a heavy prune every couple of yrs, alot of those tree pendants I brought up at xmas were made of it.
welcome to my woodturning world
