Craters Black and Orange
« on: February 05, 2017, 08:34:00 PM »
My latest piece, called Craters Black and Red,its 4"x4"x4",made of English White Oak,started off with a cube and turned it corner to corner  making chucking point on the 4 corners, then on the flat sides put a screw chuck on 3 sides, once done I then used a 3/8 spidle gauge to hollow the first 7 craters, after that was done I remade a jig(from a previous incarnation) to hold the outside of the craters, and 4 dovetail pieces held by a bolt going through the jig and between the 4 dovetail pieces, with a washer holding them the bolt was tightened just enough to hold it all stabl enough to turn the inside of other 7 craters, the next job was carving between the craters  then sanding to 600 grit, once done it was dyed with vinegar wirewool mixture, dried, denibbed and re-dyed,dried a second time and de-nibbed again, then the outside was stippled with a 3 mm round burr and the resulting white spots dyed Orange(I keep saying red in other places for some reason), then topped it off with 2 coats of clear Plasticoat from Wilkos.

Never heard of the bloke till friday night when the chap doing the critique asked if I'd been inspired by his work, I said no I've never heard of him, I had to ask him yesterday to remind me who he was, so I could look him up.

This type of piece is always intriguing... the texturing and contrasting colours works very well.

Eric,

much more open than your previous postings of this type of form, so for that reason I'm assuming it's also much more delicate. Well done on holding it together while turning it.

And I love the texture and colour combinations.

Eric

A great piece to my eyes, wonderful dark grey colour from the vinegar wire wool applications.

How long did you steep the wire wool in the vinegar?

Regards

Phil
