Hi from the new start - Viceroy advice
« on: February 07, 2017, 11:22:10 PM »
Hi folks
I'm Andy. Just joined up and looking for a spot of help.
I've been turning on and off for a while on an old Tyme Cub but my tastes have outgrown it. Last week I scored a short bed Viceroy at auction which I'm hoping to use for some much bigger diameter stuff. Unfortunately it came pretty bare with no faceplates or chucks. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any suitable chucks looking for a new home? I'm also going to need a curved tool rest at some point too as I just have the standard long and short straight jobs. Any other advice gratefully appreciated too.
Cheers
Andy

Hi, and welcome to the forum. You've got yourself a fine machine, there.
There's a wealth of information about the Viceroy on the lathes.uk website at this address.http://www.lathes.co.uk/viceroy/page2.html
The inboard thread is a 1.5-inch diameter by 8 t.p.i thread and the outboard is a 1.25-inch by 9 t.p.i.

Having said all that.....if I knew of any chucks going begging, I'd buy them myself.

Cheers for the replies guys. Eddie, Les has the right thread sizes in his reply and I think it's no.3 tapers. The outboard thread is left handed. Tool post is 1"
Les, let's not fight over who gets what!  ;)
Cheers again

A curved toolrest was one of the first things I bought a zillion years ago. Not even sure where it is now I just know that as I improved so it's shortcomings and needlessness became apparent.
My advice? Stick with your long and short rests, its practice you need not 'stuff'.
On the faceplate question get yourself a handful of nuts from a fixings specialist and bury each in a bit of wood with 2-pack adhesive. Hey presto the basis of any number of faceplates/friction chucks etc. Almost cost free, whats not to like?
The one proviso is that the nut itself MUST tighten onto the face behind the thread on the spindle. It is this face, not the thread, that provides the accuracy.
All the best with whatever you decide on

Wid,

Reference tool-rests, I went down to a local engineering works and for a few pounds had a range of different length rests made, not curved admittedly but it cannot be beyond the whit of an engineering firm to help you out with them.

The other answer is the Sorby Tool-post system, buy a 1" post and whatever rest tops you want.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Thanks for all the replies folks.
Got a possible chuck lined up and my tame engineer on standby!
Last resort will just be make a new shaft with sensible threads!
Fingers crossed I'll be bashing out some big bowls soon enough.
Again I appreciate your time.

Welcome to the forum Andy

Robert Sorby do an internal & external S shaped tool rest these are about 24.00 each a tool post is just under 9.00 then they also do 4", 6" and 9" tool rests to fit along with a flat top scraper rest. Also they do a range of thread adaptors with fit their chucks.

All the best
