Bound and stapled
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:05:03 PM »
Another pot with reinforcements!
I have a regular customer who drip-feeds me pieces of oak which he has converted into usable timber, from a tree on his family's farm. As a rule, I get pieces that are 8" x 8" (20cm x 20cm) in section, and about 20" (50cm) long, one of which I recently turned into a giant egg-cup for him, so this was an offcut from that piece, starting off as an 8" cube. The wood is always quite green and prone to splitting (which my customer encourages), so I made this as a surprise for him, thinking that I could always stick it on the shelf in the shop and sell it, if he doesn't like it.

One of the reasons that I've attached so many pictures is to show how the camera angle can affect the apparent shape of the subject. In reality, the rim is about 3/8" (9mm) narrower than the widest point of the body, but the camera angle tells a different story.

Thank you, George.....it's about as 'full' a shape as I could achieve without it looking too much like one of those dog-bowls that you hate so much! ;D

I think if you look at this and imagine it as half the height it would look like a dog bowl but because you have made it the depth it is the proportions look right if that makes sense.

That's interesting, George.....I hadn't thought of it in that way, but you're right. I tried covering the top half of the picture and it really does look more dog-bowl-like.

Am I the only one who see's the similarity between this pot's shape and your avatar image. Are you settling into a style Les?

I'm always fascinated by the way you manage to use wire in so many different ways to bring a new level of interest to your work.

All the best
