Lathe upgrade 'Phoenix Turner MK3'
« on: January 23, 2018, 10:40:07 PM »
Maybe a little outside the normal realms of 'wood' turning but plenty of turning none the less...

For the last year or more, I've been building a new work shop, at the same time I took the opportunity to upgrade my old Wakin BZL into something a bit more useful and better spec'd.

Anyway, I thought some of you here might find this interesting so I include a few pics below, and a link to a more complete album.

I'll let the pictures do the talking, and later add any technical info should anyone be interested and request it.

That is a superb job
I particularly like the outboard turning arrangement.
...and the new spindle
... and, well, all of it really
Well done
Duncan

After seeing this lathe in the flesh  before and after..... the new spindle makes all the difference in forward or reverse
and the offside tool rest is really solid and will take up any position with very little vibration ..... Amazing Upgrade.
that has been well thought out
   Regards Tony

Thanks both.

You’re right Tony, spindle and rest are the key elements, I’m pleased with how they both work. Being able to safely turn clockwise and anti clockwise is something I can’t imagine not being able to do. Always surprises me that most machines are really only designed to turn in one direction.

Cheers

Great story, good to see a grand old lathe getting a new lease of life.

Well Done.
