Keith,

You've really got a choice of 2 types:
The Crushgrind,
or the more traditional one with the pressure adjuster on the top.

I'd recommend that if you go for the traditional, buy ones with a ceramic grinder mechanism, the older Plastic for Salt and Aluminium for Pepper don't last very well. The Curshgrinds only come in ceramic.

You don't say where you are but most Woodturning suppliers will sell the grinders by Mail Order. Here are a couple to start you off:

Recently made a pepper grinder for our kitchen to replace a worn out old style mill. Used a Crushgrind ceramic grinder and it works beautifully. A bit more expensive than the traditional type but way better in my opinion.

Hi Keith

I keep both of them https://www.oliverswoodturning.co.uk/product-category/woodturning-accessories/project-accessories/page/2/

Both types are ceramic. I don't turn many of these but the odd ones that I've done I use the crush grind less fiddly to put together  :)

All the best

Ed

Hi Keith,  We had Les Thorne at the club recently and he did a crush grind mill for us and said that it wasn't his intension to use anything else. My thought would be if it's good enough for Les then it must be long lasting as you don't want come backs. Ed (above) Axminster are all good.
Welcome to the forum by the way.    Julian

Hi, thank you for your replies, have gone for the crush grind mechanisms, just placed an order with Ed,
when selecting the wood is there any I should stay away from taking into account the food connection,
your input is much appreciated,

                                                  regards Keith.

I have made many of these and always use Crushgrind. They are supposed to be guaranteed for 25 years, but not sure who to go back to if there is a problem. Anyway I have not had any problems and have used getting on for 100 now. You should always use a ceramic fitting for the salt mill because of corrosion of the steel ones. Shop around for them as they vary in price quite a bit, and many woodturning suppliers sell them. As far as woods are concerned, i would not use any splayed woods. Most others are ok i think, but others here might advise better on that point. Malcolm.
