Wood ID please
« on: May 18, 2018, 03:37:59 PM »
This is some wood I was left by a friend.he always had a load of odd woods often  not commercial but this was unlabelled and new to me. It has a very strong sort of medicinal smell when cut and is fairly soft, open grained. As seen there is a fair bit of colour in it as well. Haven't tried turning it yet so don't know what it will be like though I suspect it will be pretty coarse grained. Any idea of it's name, where from etc?  The colours in the images are pretty close to the real thing. it is a bit dirty as well mind.

Pete the first thing that springs to mind is Rubber wood. But I am sure there will be other suggestions.

Looks a lot like horse chestnut
I have turned quite a lot of this, tears out if tools not very sharp can get a good finish.

if it has a strong smell then that's camphor wood pete.

it's hugely variable but i've seen it look like that and it reminds me of the stock i have.

Definitely not horse chestnut though the graining is similar. Got some of that as well and they are quite different. Most distinctive thing is the strong smell. I cut some on the bandsaw about 3 o'clock and the workshop still smells of it. Very strong. I have never used camphor wood but sounds appropriate LOL.

it will smell for weeks mate so that's fine if you like the smell but it's a bit strong for me.

stick it in a box until you get round to using it or it will continue to spread the scent.

i'd clear out the bandsaw too as that will just continue to release the scent.

nice wood though.

I've no idea but it's certainly quick growing, look at the size of the annual rings.

in the same paragraph it say it'll be 100' tall in 50 years. that's pretty fast in my book.

don't forget that you have the very center of the tree that will always grow faster than the outer edge in an older specimen.

don't we all slow down as we get older?

does your mate have any other unusual timbers? i may be interested if he has?

I am afraid he passed away last year and left me a pilke of timber. Just foud some lengths of what is marked as ebony, dark brown with black markings. heaven knows what else is in there. Gotg a bin full and a pallet piled up along with a load of burrs.

Will do. Just turned  piece that I thought was lignum, maybe but has a lot more colour than I expected. Very heavy. 'Scuse photo, quick snapshot in the sun but the colour is pretty accurate on the top.
