Natural Horse Chestnut
« on: December 08, 2018, 08:51:41 AM »
Well hi all Sorry not posted for some time now pop back now and again to see what's going on...

Thought I'd share this with you.....

Someone posted a tree for free on the forum some months ago. This poor old tree had to come down as it was full of rot.

So I collected it and they wanted a turned item in return.

Their spec was natural!!!

Horse Chestnut rotten burr, around 12" tall finished with Chestnut satin lacquer spray

All the best

Ed

Nice, my type of turning. Lovely wood though I imagine it was a bit tricky on top getting a good finish with the tools?

That looks great. I like the shape. Hollowing must have been a tricky and delicate operation, particularly through the small opening. The natural edge of the opening is attractive.  That's the sort of piece that would catch your eye when you entered a room. Nice!

Nice piece Ed. Glad it was left natural instead of the subtle colouring that you would normally do.

.....This is our second favourite type of wood Ed... leaves its self open to a slight colour wash or basically anything you want
to do. You have certainly captured the essence of the piece ..... the shape goes very well.
We used to have a hoard of Horse Chestnut Burr......sadly run out   :'(
       Very Envious.

Ed,

I know burrs are always an unknown as to what you'll really get. But this is great to look at, the turnings top notch as well. This going back to the tree's owners will be an item of pride, well done mate.
