Wood ID

Does anyone know what this piece of wood is? It was wax coated so no smell to speak of. I have scraped as much wax off as possible as it was pretty dusty.

Is it very dense, Paul....it reminds me of Mulga (Acacia Aneura)?

Hi Les,
The end grain looks similar but the sapwood in the photos on Hobbit House http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/mulga.htm seem to show a darker sapwood than on the piece I have so maybe it's something else.

It is fairly dense.

This piece of wood could have been stored for a long time before I got it.

The side grain looks suspiciously like wenge to me.

Hello Paul
It looks like something given to me as Brazilian Kingwood.

Definitely not wenge and the kingwood I've seen is much more purple in colour with more cream coloured stripes but thanks for the suggestions. I'm guessing it's probably some sort of rosewood but I don't know enough about them to say which one!

I will have to turn it to see how the colours turn out below the surface

Paul, if you could clean up the grain so i could see the pore structure and surface grain it would help.

my guess without seeing those picture for now is that it's Acacia melanoxylon often known as blackwood.

It could be Blackwood, but as you say need a better shot of the grain,at  the moment the colour isnt right . But the sap wood and bark look ok.
