SKarts Exhibition Entry Untitled 1
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:45:45 AM »
Had some good news this week, both my entries for SKarts Open Contemporary Arts Exhibition have been accepted, the piece in this post and the next one.  This piece was made in co-operation with Nick Agar.

Hi George

Thanks for the comments.

Last year I won one of the Bursaries from the Worship Company.  Part of the funding was for me to spend 3 days with Nick.  This bowl was the culmination of the techniques and design work I learned whilst with him.  I don't know if you've worked with Nick but his method is to show you something on one lathe and then you do it yourself, he really is quite firm on that, so when you've made something, you've actually made it and not had the tutor fixing things for you.

A fantastic experience, I would strongly recommend his courses to anyone.

I used some of the same techniques for the other bowl but eased them back somewhat to produce a crisper looking piece, rather than the very sculptured look of the this one.  Hope that helps

Cheers

The wood (from what I can see) is old Oak?

But I love the effect of the verdigris (colouring) on the external carving.

Or is the effect a chemical one? I've seen it done but never managed to find out what is used to create it.

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

I could tell you Dr4g0nfly, but then I'd have to kill you:-).

It's a verdigris wax, available from all good wood turning suppliers.

Cheers
