Couple more from the 'scrap heap'
« on: April 28, 2020, 06:43:06 PM »
Digging through the mounds of wood that have accumulated can reveal some lovely bits and pieces.
1st is from a pile of laburnum I have had lying around for a year or more. This piece was borderline with lots of splits radiating out. All ready to start rotting. These have all been filled and sealed in true Kintsugi style with brass. The base is 6" (150mm) tall and overall with the chimney it is 16" 410mm) tall.  The chimney is for an oil lamp so heat proof and it has a removable glass insert to hold the candle
2nd is an unknown wood (Steve?) that is heavily spalted. Expected it to be very soft but surprisingly hard. Decided to use it to m ake a tea bowl style vessel. It measures 4" (110mm) diameter and is 5 1/4" (135mm) tall. Both are finished with carnauba wax polish applied fast with buffing wheels. C&C welcome as always.

Thanks people, ironic that the 2nd is preferred. The oil lamps sell as fast as I make them whereas the t bowls are an acqured taste and don't sell as quickly

elm looks the part for this one.

we don't have any other species growing in the UK that i can think of that have the Ulmaceae markings like you get in elm.

the only exception to that would be Zelkova but the chances that you have that are quite slim...

Thanks DSteve.I have had some weird amd wonderful woods from a friend who was a furniture designer and always experimenting with different woods but that wasn't one of them. I'll plump for elm.

I can see why the Tea Bowl is popular but for me the candle stand with Hurricane cover is the one. It evokes feelings of long lost days when we actually had and used Hurricane lamps for light.

Used to go to sleep to the hiss of the lamp.
They sell well at shows. I tend to use recycled chimneys with these as the ones you buy online are either expensive or very thin glass and so very fragile. Got another one made, not photographed yet.
