Enhancing Grain
« on: June 18, 2022, 10:36:04 AM »
Nothing enhances the grain on some woods more than a coat of oil. I want to use a Lacquer finish on my next project though so what can I use to enhance the grain on the Bocote before I spray the Lacquer on?

You could also download the compatibility chart from Chestnutproducts homepage - which is a good starting point.

Needs to be a polymerising oil i.e. Danish, Citrus, Finishing oils but not mineral oil as that doesn't dry

After Pete made the suggestion I did a search and there are lots of articles saying you can use any drying oil, just let it dry for three days to a week before applying the lacquer.

The Chestnut compatibility chart says No to Lacquer on top of Oil but it’s been incorrect before so possibly not a good source of information for this particular technique.

The trick to any finishing technique you haven't used is to turn a coin bowl or a bud vase or something else quick and small in timber demand put the finish on to see how it goes / refine the application.
