Problem with new Nova Comet II DR
« on: December 01, 2022, 08:02:40 PM »
Purchased a Nova Comet II DR from Turners Retreat on 10th Oct 2022 so nearly had it 8 weeks and it’s just started making a heck of a clacking noise from the headstock end! Any ideas what it might be?

I’ve contacted Turner’s Retreat who told be to email a video of the problem to them (not an easy matter for this technophobe but done) Am waiting to hear back from them…unfortunately I’m imagining the worst!  Struggled to add a video file of the issue that’s small enough for this site. But have linked a video from my instagram page if that’s okay?

Try slackening the tension on the belt as much as possible then run the lathe so the motor spins without the spindle spinning. If the noise is still there, the problem is with the motor. If not, the problem is with the spindle. If the latter, check the alignment of the disk and the position for the speed sensor so nothing is touching when the lathe spins. Do likewise for the pulley.

Well I’ve slackened drive belt off and it’s definitely spindle related. It looks to me as if the gear wheels on the spindle are loose, they certainly have some play in them which could be causing the noise? Hey ho not sure what to do now but will converse with  Turner’s Retreat today. Thanks, Al

It's not your problem , Get Turners Retreat to fix it or send a replacement

Sounds like it could be just a loose screw on the pulley. Be aware they often use two screws - one on top of the other. If so you need to remove the top screw to tighten the bottom one. The top screw then locks it securely in place. Good luck.

Edit: Looking at the manual there are indeed two screws:
