Hi John,
I love the vase shape. You are right about the pyro though. I would've used a wire to burn the lines around and possibly a ruler for the others. Good effort though.

I'm with the crowd here - I love the vase shape.

But I'll say for a first effort with a Pyro machine (one more than I've ever made), I think it's not so bad.

Have you ever looked at a real Greek vase? - gouged with a sharp stick when still wet clay and later splodged with paint - you're at least as good as that.

A bit of practice and you'll crack it - well done.

John what can I add ...  crude, rustic and simple, but would serve it's purpose, you've got a good form, like the ring handle, (not noted by most) are there a pair,

it's a good finish to even with the pyro, it all works, well done on having a go.

Hi all,
Thank you for your comments, Some response:-
I did try wire burning, but with the holding method used on the lathe  (jam chuck) I couldn't get the required. speed and pressure.
Yes there are two ring handles.
The wood is fairly green sycamore.

Hi John
I love the basic pot and would love to have made it myself.
For what its worth, and with 20/20 hindsight, I think you have added 3 different pattern 'bands' which all then compete for the limelight.
In my opinion, and if it were my decision to take, I would suggest that the bottom one doesn't add anything to the finished piece at all.
The turned step, at the neck, would have been enough on its own without any burning.
Or
The main band around the middle, were it to stand alone, is a little too low for my liking. I think the piece would have a better balance if were raised, away from the centre of mass, and came to rest somewhere around the major curve.
My I also suggest that if whichever burnt band you chose to leave didn't consist of a repeated pattern then comparisons couldn't be made. If you see what I mean.
I hope that is of some help or interest.
All the best with the next one
Brian
