Mulberry crotch bowl
« on: October 13, 2012, 06:26:21 PM »
Given a lump of mulberry with three branches coming off it I decided to have a play and see what would come from it if turned down the cebntre. Talk about shaking teeth loose LOL. the bowl is 5" dia. Haven;'t done one of these for a few years and forgot how hard on the wrists it can be.

I can see tooling marks on the branches that should have been removed.

George, I'm sure they will be (or have been by now).

It's a lovely piece, with a fantastic honey colour. I'd have thought, it being a crotch, that the grain might have been a little more spectacular though.

I have a soft spot for Mulbury, just wish I could get a little more of it.

George your eye sight is too good LOL. You are right of course and before it goes for sale I will be at it to remove them stationary. The grain is a bit more dramatic than the photo shows but not a lot. First time I've turned mulberry so didn't know what to expect. Very hard wood.

Hi Pete.

Mulberry is a nice wood but it can lose its yellow colour and go a nice warm brown colour.
It was good to meet you last thursday as it is always nice to be able to put a face to a name.
Regards George

Good to meet you George, learnt a lot thanks.

Nice piece, Pete, well done on as said a hard timber, the branches like that need finishing by hand off the lathe.

Interesting your mulberry is much lighter than what I see down under. Still a darn nice piece, well done.

Hughie,

you've probably got the right Mulberry then!

Strange story behind this. The black mulberry was planted throughout southern England in the 17th century in the hope that it could be used to feed silkworms for the then burgeoning silk industry. But there was a problem. somebody did not realise there were 2 kind's of Mulberry and the idea was unsuccessful because silkworms prefer the white mulberry.

Still, all these years later we turners are taking advantage of it!
