Flame Cut is just where the timber is cut (normally as a veneer) across a stressed crotch to give the grain and ripple effect.
Woody, we've discussed Mahogany before, did it create a load of dust like the stuff does? I certainly looks like one of the Mahogany's in colour and grain as best as the picture reveals.
Did you tinge (Heat dip in hot sand - or some-such) the corners of one of the platters in some way, they appear darker than the core wood?
