one armed woodturner.
« on: February 17, 2018, 08:58:27 PM »
well i have been teaching down at Phoenix the other today. i had 2 different benefactors one in the morning and then the other the afternoon. the one in the afternoon just blew me away. he was only able to use on arm. So it has been hard to think Right handed as i am left handed how to turn then along comes this gent that says after i ask him to have a go at turning a bowl. the only thing is i only can use one hand. not there to ask o what happened i just start thinking how are we going to get round this. well after a few tries at different cuts we nailed it and he turned a fab bowl from burr elm. i after asking him if it was ok to try and also turn one handed to see what difficulties he faced tried and this helped me understand which way to tackle the training session. i now feel so good about what we do to help our veterans.

hi John
thank you for this. i have been a volunteer at Phoenix house for a few month now. i teach woodturning to them and every time they feel good at what they have made it makes me feel good. this day i was feeling fab at helping him do something that was out of his comfort zone.

Woodturning at its best. Good for you. The only limitations are the ones we place on ourselves. I used to work with a blind turner at a club years ago and eneded up learning more than he did.

LOL. Couldn't you find a better bit of wood for him to work with. Turning that with one hand takes some skill I should thin k.
