Padauk Pear Jewellery Box
« on: December 11, 2013, 03:33:26 PM »
Turned from 75mm square of Padauk heartwood and sapwood. Approx 5" tall with a "silver" leaf. Base reverse chucked to make concave and stop it falling over ;D lid also reverse chuckedand turned, they look terrible with a flat bottom. C & C welcome as usual.

A very nice piece Rod, try and apply your sanding sealer with the grain and you may find that it penetrates better. I would like the lid to have been hollowed out a little bit more too, but otherwise a nice piece , the shape is spot on.

Thanks Andy & Malcy

John: I think you refer to the light bit of open grain on the heartwood part of the bowl, photo 2. The cellulose sanding sealer was applied neat and liberally with and across the grain. Doesn't show in natural light, I'm wondering whether it's the wax finish in the open grain highlighted by the flash. Well pointed out, whichever it is I shall have to investigate  ???

A cracking idea, Rod....love the idea of the new twist on the old 'wooden fruit'....not the easiets of things to reverse chuck, I'm sure.
Hwyl, a da iawn! Les

Hi Rod,
I agree with Les that the lid could have been difficult to reverse. I wonder if you apply several coats of sanding sealer if it might be better.

I still like it though.

Nice one Rod, stunning piece and added surprise, and far from difficult, rough shape leaving chuck mounts each end, hollow as needed both parts, finish shape of lid when on base, jam chuck finish base .. job sorted, as seen .. Well I would have done it that way.

Thank you for sharing.

Rod,

A truly wonderful box set into such a well proportioned shape. I like the contrast between the heartwood and sapwood, it brings out a dramatic image.

Diawl, ti lan yn gynnar bore ma Les, wrong time of the year for picking pears ;D ;D

I bought the leaves some time ago ,I think from "Meantime" when i was buying clocks. They were about £1.50.

They are available from Turners Retreat for £2.00, put "leaf" in the search box, couldn't find them under any other category or click on link http://www.turners-retreat.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=leaf

Hwyl am y tro
