Oak Bowls
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:56:08 PM »
Well I've been turning for about 7 weeks now and these are a couple of piece's that I've turn from off cut's of oak from a joiners workshop that I've been given the little oak bowl that I've turned in the past week and the dish was a couple of weeks ago.

Oak bowl 170mm x 55mm

Dish 320mm x 40mm

Let me know what you think

Thanks

Ed

7 weeks? I am impressed. The style, design etc is way beyond most 7 week old turners and as far as I can see so is the workmanship. Look forward to seeing what you are making in another 7 weeks.

Well Ed, given it's Oak, which is not the easiest of timbers at times, you've excelled yourself with the fact of the short time frame you've been turning.

You've got a good finish on both, an high mirror gloss to the bowl, which is a really nice form, edging on an ogee flowing into the rim, only slightly.

The grain of the plate has come over well, nice chucky piece, with constant flow across the inside, difficult to judge the under side and the exact foot, but looks like an ogee again.

Keepers both and reflect back on in 7 weeks time as to how you've progressed. Be very pleased so far.

Cheers  David

7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!       7 Weeks!Blimey, Ed....I struggled to get that far in 7 months of flat-out turning. That's quite an achievement, keep it up.

I'm loving this turning thing and it's becoming life changing!!!

David this is the base.

Also this a heavy elm bowl that I've just finished for friends they have a large farm and this is designed to go in their kitchen size is 450mm x 85mm and the wall is 20mm thick. I had to do it they have a large wood on the farm and I've been offer to go and help myself for as long as I want, you should see the new chainsaw!!!  :D :D :D

You have made a massive leap forward in just 7 weeks ED.

A darn good job on both pieces.

Cheers Ed, underneath has that same nice flow and you've given the foot some detail that it not looking as being the mount.

That is one nice piece of Elm, like the form, solid, it will serve it's purpose and grace that large Farmhouse table.

It's one lovely gift and the giving is the important part ... an a tree or two out of it .. well the better.

Ed,

I'm impresed for someone who's been turning as little as 7 weeks. It looks like you've already progressed through the 'Tool Made Shape' phase to the 'I'll make the Tool work how I want it skill set already.
