Is an adaptor mandril for different chucks sizes available
« on: November 21, 2014, 08:07:17 PM »
As above, I have just changed lathe from a woodmen (3/4" x16 TPI) to a jet (1" x 8TPI)
rather than having to buy a new chuck is there an adaptor via mandril (2MT) I can use.
Or do I need to save my pennies and get a new/used replacement???

the benift of your wisdom please

I would not go down the route of a mandrel, one it will move your chuck and it's work-piece away from the headstock bearings and two any run out will be exacerbated. Depending on the make of your chuck it may be possible to get a new insert which will take the Jet thread.
Go for a replacement if no insert is available, and put your chuck on ebay. Get a few quid back!

Not that helpful, but 3/4" x 16 TPI is the standard thread for Record Power Lathes. Most of Axminster Lathes use 1" x 8 TPI . Having checked both an not found an adapter which converts the way you need, not to say there's not one out there somewhere nor the person which knows where. Have read, maybe even on here as to what and where these are available in a range of sizes.

Hang on if can before you make any serious jump and shell out the £'s & d's

Cheers David

If I read your post right you want to use your 3/4 x 16 chuck on a 1" x 8 lathe, if this is correct then Axminster do an adaptor   http://www.axminster.co.uk/thread-adaptor-1-x-8tpi-f-to-3-4-x-16tpi-m

Is your chuck direct threaded 3/4" x16 TPI or is there already an adaptor in it?
