So this
steel
...wood Ekki, it almost broke my tools! I eventually got it roughed to a circular shape, ready to start turning it, and powered the lathe off, and saw that the tear out was extreme, any tips with this wood?

Hi John
Spooky or what? I've never heard of it before but I got some last week and now it crops up all the time. It is very hard and dusty. Sharp tools seem to be a must. I;ve just roughed it down (spindle) and managed to get it to take a male thread although the grain is a little coarse.
I have quite a lot of it. if it turns out to be a beggar I may well give it away
Cheers Dave

If it lands on your foot it's more of an "EKKIng H***"

When I was at college my tutor offered me some "Ekki" but said it makes a good chopping block, or support for Southend Pier but not much else.
I still have the chopping block, its to heavy to keep moving

Ekki was used primarily as a wood for underwater piling, harbour walls and pier supports. It is full of silica I think, which makes it almost indestrctible and slaughters any sharp edge that comes its way! Not really a turning wood although I had a batch years ago, which didn't cause too much trouble - but it isn't much to look at. Did think of making truncheons from it ......... Ekki Thumpers.
