Fluted vase
« on: April 22, 2015, 08:20:22 PM »
I came by a large trunk of Spalted Sycamore, this is the first turning from it.

It stands 140mm high by 190mm across the rim.

The two holes were where the spalt had gone soft (like polystyrene) so I poked it out and cleaned up the holes.

C&C as you will.

What I like about this is that the shape is simple, allowing the spalt pattern to come to the fore, with just a tad of decoration at the base where the spalt is a lesser feature. My personal opinion is that the base is a little heavy/broad, but that doesn't distract from its beauty.

A lovely shape..... but perhaps a little more than half inch high ?
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Ed Thank you, actually I've not posted for too long, so selected some of my recent work and photographed it, hence the mass posting.

Les, you are right.

It should have been taller but the original C Jaw tenon cracked so I had to use some of the waste wood length to remount it and instead used my D Jaws. Not wanting it to fail again I did leave it a little thicker in the foot than originally intended.

Hi Bryan

A nice simple shape, for me also the base could be slightly smaller but that is being picky. Spalted sycamore is my favorite wood but as you know it goes over quick if not caught on time.

You posted your latest reply as I was mine, now understand the foot size. :-)

Thanks for sharing

Mark,

Thank you, I noticed our posts crossed as well.

David,

Not FOG wood, a friendly tree surgeon who keeps his eye out for me.

I want to make another one but balance the spalting better. It ends at the heart wood, growth wood point with the wide line you see in the third image. So I'm looking to cut and mount the next piece more carefully so it runs around the form and not rise up through the rim.

Well, that's the plan!
