how long to microwave woodworm
« on: April 26, 2015, 06:08:05 PM »
not done this before but i've come across some of the little blighters in some of my skittles and want to know if i can microwave them into oblivion?

how long do you give it?

does it depend on the size of wood or the moisture content.

i've done one pin 10"x5" and given it 20 seconds then 30 second in quick succession and it was quite warm. is that enough?

all help appreciated, thanks.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I doubt if the microwaves would penetrate far enough into something like a skittle to do any good. You are relying on conducted heat on anything thick and that will take several minutes rather than a few seconds.

Steve,

The alternative to microwaves is freezing. Especially for thicker items (like your skittles). Wrap them against being touched by the frost and put them in the freezer, leave a couple of days to be sure the wood is frozen right through and the worms are frozen to death.

Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

i think a combination of microwave and freezing would be besst as freezing wont kill the egges. i think short bursts for a longer period would be best maybe even in de-frost mode?
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

I rough my bowls down to about 1/2" then microwave on full power for about a minute.
Microwaves do not penetrate very far into the wood

microwaves generally cook from the middle of things to the edge, the microwaves penetrate wood and meat and vegetable matter and vibrate the molecules, creating heat,I do mine on low power/defrost in 30 second cycles with 2 mins to cool between cycles, so things don`t get to hot and catch fire from the middle outwards and go bang.
welcome to my woodturning world

This is properly a stupid question but why don't you just soak the wood in woodworm killer

Wood Rabbits. By Eck, they would make short work of the woodpile.  :)

woodworm killer costs money and soaking the pin in any solution weakens the structure of the wood.

i dont do it to every pin (thankfully as i make over 320 pins a year) but there are the odd ones that have a worm in them and its those i wish to kill.

At best if so few, then to throw them away ... less it's an old set you're refurbishing .. not clear as to if their in new timber.

::) ... I've re-read over 320 p-a-y .. as the maths of 9 pins a set = 35.555555 sets, good going there..  As I'd begun to find the Pubs and Skittle Teams where in decline .. that was a few years back now.

Cheers  David

the year before i made 432pins = 48 sets

this year i already have orders for 27 sets.

it's still popular...

I'm pleased to read those figures and the games still popular.. It had been as Captain of a West Country Team getting hard to press-gang players and as Pubs changed hands/Brewers sold out or became Restaurants, Alleys became more and more profitable dinning areas/function rooms.. with some Village life with the lack of a Pub dying too.

Which have you found best to deal with the critters so far .. bit of both hot & cool.

Cheers
