one more exploding bowl
« on: August 02, 2015, 10:04:33 PM »
just had my second bowl explode on me. that's two in 7 years...

it did have cracks but i thought it was sound and i've turned more cracked ones that survived, just shows that you can never be 100% sure.

pity really as it was a beautiful bit of macrocarpa and one half nearly ripped my left nipple off.

be careful guys & girls...

should i have had more????

one or two have fallen off but these two exploded...

this one tried leaving me with a huge scar where my left nipple should be and the first one took three teeth out.

No two is definitely enough   :) especially if you are losing body parts, it is acute reminder how things can go wrong and how important safety is and a full face helmet. May be nipple pprotectors too :o, glad your safe.  I wasn't clear in my last post and it may have come across wrong as I have had far more than two explode over the years  :) but turn a bit slower now so to reduce the risk of excessive impact. Like I say glad you still have all your parts.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

The kind of material I often use means I have had far more than two fall apart though like Mark I tend to turn slower and usually I can tell by the sound if something is getting dodgy so as yet have been hit just once and that was onto a face mask. I have also developed a habit of turning things that have splits and defects from one side instead of being in the line of fire. Still a bit scary when the piece flies past your shoulder.

...In days of old
When Knights were bold
And a turner did wear armour.
A flying bowl
Knocked him out cold,
So he became a farmer......
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

'tis safer see, he said with glee, a twinkle in his eye.
better to watch the birds than bowls, flyin' across the sky!

Would this be responsible for the reports of UFO's we keep getting on the internet.?
And do we need a 'Poetry Please' thread?

Ron,
I'll try posting a rhyme
If I can find time
But maybe this one in I will squeeze
And if you can't beat it
Then simply delete it
Then that's the end of Poetry Please
