Playing with chalk paint
« on: July 03, 2016, 04:39:02 PM »
This is a small spalted sycamore bowl that was uninspiring, but SWMBO is playing with chalk paints on an upcycling course, so I thought I'd have a go. the stuff is a bit thick to use and it's not very happy giving a spray pattern when spun, but it's all about playing.

6" x 2" (155mm x 50mm) in size,

C&C welcome

Two things that I really, really like about this one is the way that the paint colour has bled out of the two scratch lines below the rim, and the subtle flecking of blue spots within the white body.
Les
p.s. ... how do you seal this stuff?
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Les,

I can't remember the name of the paint, it's available as a whole range, but it is sealed with a very soft bee's wax polish.

This is so not my taste and I really really want to dislike it but I am sorry I have to say i like it.

I like the overall effect of this bowl, but there are three things I would do differently. First, I would prefer it to be thinner - l am not a fan of chunkier pieces, just my opinion. Secondly, I would like the two blue bands to be clean and crisp, unlike Les. Thirdly, there is a concave curve towards the base. I think the curve of the bowl should continue straight to the bottom. This would give the effect of the bowl floating rather than just sitting. Just my thoughts. Otherwise an interesting effect. Malcolm.

Have played around with chalk paints myself and knowing the difficulties that can sometimes arise...... think you have
achieved a pleasing  unusual look , with good colour contrasts

Thank you Gents,

One thing that I don't think really shows is just how thick the blue paint is on the white, it really is noticeable to the touch, maybe 0.5mm, and that is after I've spun it at high speed.

Chalk paint appears to be Emulsion (what the Americans call Latex) paint with a food grade calcium powder added, it really is thick and difficult to apply smoothly. The bowl itself was painted a couple of times and sanded back carefully to get a smooth but not back to wood finish.

I think I'll persist with this idea for a few more bowls, I like the effect it gives but next time I'll thin the paint and see if it moves better, trouble is I might get more bleed on the thin lines

Loving the effect you have created with the chalk paints Bryan the blue sits really well against the white

All the best

Hello Bryan,

I saw this bowl 'in the flesh' last night and the picture doesn't do it justice - nice and simple and very Greek

Dancie,

thank you, though you might have introduced yourself as such. Did we speak at any time?
