Oak hollow form
« on: March 13, 2017, 01:59:08 PM »
Just a little hollow form in oak, ebonised and textured. It is on a slate base with some naturally coloured pebbles. The form is 5 1/2" tall inc. finial and 8" diameter. C&C welcome as always

Pete ..Our personal opinion is everything seems to gel well with this piece from finial down to the slim plinth.... the
only thing not sure about is the foot which seems to detract the eye.
    Kind Regards Tony di

Can't win 'em all George. I'll keep trying

Thanks Georg and Les. Looking at the photo I see what you mean about the foot, May be my photography as it doesn't look quite as prominent in real life but I'll have another look at it.

I would get rid of the Finial and the foot and I think it would be OK.

Sorry Pete but I must admit to not understanding all this stuff with pebbles and suchlike so I do not feel qualified to comment on that, however as regards the hollow form itself I am afraid that to me the foot looks like the chucking point has not been removed. If the whole thing is 8" in diameter that makes the finial at least an inch or more  in diameter which again I feel is a little bit too big for the h/f.
I do however feel that there is a good finish on the h/f  that brings out the grain superbly.
So for me chuck away the pebbles and driftwood, turn of the foot and make the finial more delicate and you would have a stand alone piece that would look lovely.

Quite a mixed reaction, thanks to all for commenting. Common denominator seems to be the foot. Looking at it in the flesh it is too thick and needs to be paired down quite a bit. I want to keep a thin foot just to raise it up but have made this one too deep. Always useful to have others opinions to make you look again at something.

I have to agree about the foot it does look a bit big and leaving it square looking does make it look like a chucking point but other than that this is the type of work I am use to you producing. And yes this is to my taste

Pete,

I like the form, it's a good shape; the foot 'Meh'.

Looking at the colour, I'd have guessed that you had fumed it gently in Ammonia, but you say it's ebonised. A bit light for ebonisation but I like the consistent colour and it brings out the grain differently for oak.

A tall finial is always a problem, I can turn super thin ones, but they become a problem, who do you trust to touch them, and what if the purchaser breaks it at some later time? But the sweep of the rising curve is right, just not convinced about the arrow head on top.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!
