beech hollow form.
« on: March 26, 2017, 10:50:30 PM »
well had to get back to the hollow forms and finial tonight. I had this bit of spalted beech part turned to a round and decided to use it tonight as the hollow form. it is 5" across and 4 1/2 high and with the finial it is 7" high. all comments welcome.

Nice form good finish in my opinion it does not need the Finial.
Sometimes I think turners think every Hollow form should have a finial when most of the time it is an unnecessary distraction to the form

You've done that piece of timber a great service.

The curves follow through beautifully into a really nicely shaped form.

That's a lovely piece.
IMHO the finial is a good choice, but would look even better if in a very dark or black wood. Then it would link with the dark spalting lines and add more to the piece.

thank you all for the comments. I have taken photos of the form without the finial so you can see what you think with out. as for the dark timber I haven't got any black timber but could darken this by using a black die and see what happens.

Maybe turn a second finial and colour it or get a scrap of dark wood ? It would be a shame if you didn't like the original when coloured.

Or do it Photoshop ?

thank you for that and I like the black finial. sorry George but I actually like the form with the finial. I know it is personal preference and if I sell it they can decide for them selves what they like but I think the wife has her eye on this one.
