big wadkin lathes
« on: August 12, 2017, 07:57:37 PM »
other than this info on the internet i can't find anything else about these big old lathes and wondered if anyone had any other specifics?

http://www.lathes.co.uk/wadkin/

things like spindle height, overall dimensions, quill travel, spindle threads, morse tapers and other usual specs we get when buying a modern lathe.

if anyone could help i'd appreciate it.

There is one ithe workshop here. Mark had to get parts specially made for it as the threads were not conventional.

I've got an idea that Richard Findley uses one.

Check out my website: http://turnersworkshop.co.uk/wadkin.html there's links to the brochure for the RS as well as the manual and an old Wadkin brochure which is worth a look through if you have 5 minutes.

Happy to answer any questions you have about them.

Tony Wilson has an RU15 in his workshop. It's a huge beast of a bit of kit.

does tony wilson have a website?

thanks for the info Mr Findlay. some interesting specs on there and interesting to see that the spindle height is only 1090mm from floor to center.

i am after an RU lathe and i'm 6' 3" so i think it will need to be put on a plinth presuming they are a similar height.

thanks for the help guys.

Mark was 6'3" and his stands on the floor. Height over the bed is variable as the bed is motorised and can be moved out of the way. He had plans to turn an 8' diameter table top on the outboard faceplate. His is an RU and takes up a lot of room as it is massiove in every direction.
