Ash is the UK springy wood.
Used for Cartwheel spokes, hammer (and other tool) handles.

But does it matter, they are only small things so any wood woth a good long grain strength should do.

ash is porous and for that reason i would use a maple species but it depends if you are to bend it or get a metal spring?

What's wrong with bamboo? It has all the properties you want: closed grain, springy, bendable.

You can buy bamboo ones for a few quid and I agree nothing wrong with bamboo. Its just not what they want. I was thinking of a wedge separating the legs and using the spring in the wood. Personally its a gadget to many, fingers work well, and the cost will put them off but who knows.
