Life's a beech...
« on: August 15, 2018, 04:55:24 PM »
I collected recently about a ton of beech. I'm about halfway through it now. So far I have taken out 40 of those plastic 50 litre tubs, filled with shavings. I guess that makes 2000 litres of waste in shavings. Quite a good pile of solid waste too for the log burner.
The tree was growing on a steep slope so plenty of stress in the timber. A short bole with clean timber then branches from which I chose my pieces because there was a bit more character. Great to work with a tree surgeon and have the cuts where I wanted them rather than work around whatever they leave which is often the case. The back of the tree at the base had lost its sapwood, just rotted away. Came into leaf this year and then "died", the leaves went brown. I guess the dry season then did for it. Interesting that some of the timber  had no discernible sap presence whilst other pieces left the usual stripe down the faceshield !
