Interwoven ribbons - open segment bowl
« on: January 25, 2013, 12:50:41 PM »
Attached bowl is 255mm at the rim and 100mm high. It is made from 529 pieces of holly, purple heart, pau amarello and padauk in 23 layers of 24 pieces per layer (except base which is one piece). Comments welcome.

Not sure which is more amazing, the piece itself or your patience. Both incredible.

Hi Malcy.
I''m not too keen on open segmented work however this one is stunning. You normally see them with just a pattern but in this one
the pattern is "working". I can appreciate the work that has gone into the making of it and also the designing of the pattern.
True quality.

John

Hi Malcy

I have never tried segmented work as it fries my brain even thinking about all the intricate work. This is a wonderful piece. Thank you for sharing.

I think we can be sure you did not 'turn' that out in a day!

A question though, I've done a quick count and I get to 12 segments in a quarter of the circumference which mean there must be (at least) 48 pieces in each ring. Am I wrong?

Yes, you are absolutely right. The numbers I gave are those for some other pieces I am working on at the moment. There are 48 segments per layer and 21 layers like that with a single piece for the base and 24 segments making the top rim. That is 1033 pieces in all. Sorry for the error - mind in two places at once by the look of it. Malcolm.

That is an outstanding bit of turning I always admire segment work in all my years of turning it is regretfully the one thing I never attempted so I do admire the dedication and skill that must have gone into it bloody well done

Hi Malcolm  --  This is a really fantastic piece, do you use any type of software program to
design your work or do you do it on paper ? I see various adverts for segmented design
software around but don't know anyone that uses it !   --   Julian

Well just about to try my first segmented turning which I feel may be quite daunting but having seen your fantastic creation, and considering its gonna be a pen of 9 pieces I think I should stop procrastinating and get on with it :-)

Hi Julian. Thanks for the kind comments. I normally design my pieces using Excel spreadsheet and graph paper. I start with the graph paper and draw the form I want with wall thickness to actual size. This gives me the diameters for the various layers. This data is then put into a spreadsheet where I calculate segment sizes. The design or pattern is also done in the spreadsheet by making the cells to an appropriate size and then selecting colours for the cells to create the pattern. I have recently purchased 'Segmented Project Planner' software from Bill Kandler in USA. and have used it a bit so far. This allows you to draw the design and then the software translates that to the segment data you need. Like all software it needs a bit of time to learn, but it is not too bad. You can also purchase Woodturner Pro but I have no experience of this. Hope this helps.
Thanks to everone else for your kind supportive comments. Malcolm.

Hi Malcolm  --  Thanks for the reply, I think it will be a while before I am able to attempt
anything like segmented work but it does look really impressive.
