A second piece in olive ash measuring 13in x 3.5in
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:47:54 AM »
This piece has been finished with 6 coats of finishing oil. After fetching it into the house it has started to warp which I can only put down to a change in temperature ie central heating. Has anybody else had this problem?

Of your 2 Olive Ash pieces this is my favorite, the 'Olive' is dark and dramatic and there is even some ripple around the knot.

Yes I had a bord that made 3 such platters, Which I'd rough turned. The first one I finished warped which made me wait to turn the other 2.

When I was eventually happy they had settled, I refinished the first and made the other 2 to match.

It's the temperature/Humidity change affecting the moisture content of the water. With central heating, you're right, it's normally a case of further drying out. With larger pieces it's normally a good idea to bring them into the home for a week or so (or longer) before finisheg the turning to let the timber stabilise.

Bryan I bought this piece of olive ash as seasoned wood so I thought it would be okay to finish it in one "take".
Now I know that with large pieces it is probably best to keep it inside to settle or maybe turn large pieces in the summer months when there is no central heating on.

Terry, this is a for sure a beautiful piece, classic form and well finished, but for the time of year, sad some warping, hopefully not to spoil it completely.

A lesson learned for me David turning large pieces is best left for the summer months.

Thanks to you and Bryan for the comments.

Georgeous piece of wood, nicely turned, I wouldn't worry too much about it moving, it's a natural resource after all.
Well done.

Thanks John. It is just a little frustrating when you spend so much time trying to get it right.

I have to ask...how do you affect the MC of water?  ;D

Beautiful wood and you have done it justice Terry. I used to sell a fair bit to the States but as many of them have zero humidity in their houses I have pretty much stopped as things that were bone dry or so I thought would warp badly over there. Some pieces I brought with me when I moved from Cornwall to Wiltshire also split and warped. It doesn't take much with some woods.
