Bottle Stopper with a hole....
« on: March 14, 2013, 07:15:40 PM »
Well, I started to turn this bottle stopper to be a nice practice at finial creation.

I found that there is a rather 'frustrating' worm hole through the top that came out of the side of the piece.

So, decided to have a try at filling with solder.

The side has come out not too bad. The top is just 'eating' solder so is as yet unfinished. Likely a finial to add a bit of interest.

This was more about trying some solder than anything else to fill holes.

The cork is also turned and a hole created to take the one piece stopper!

Oh, its a piece of applewood and finished with some spray varnish.

Plain and simple and to run some solder in the hole ..  now find a piece of wood the same .. it's a one off, but then for sure you do find the worm holes ..  :(  ...

If you could still mount it you could add a detail or too.

Cheers  David

Arcos,

Solder huh... you're starting to think about design and features to bring to your pieces, well done.

I like the shape - almost.  It would look better if there was a better definition between the cork and the main body of the stopper. A bead and/or a cove.

I too like the shape... Almost!

The piece of cork is actually going to be my 'utility' piece of cork, my 'standard' that I actually turned for another stopper but as it was not glued could become my 'utility piece', my 'template' piece.

Anyway, the shape, to me, is not that important, especially as it was NEVER going to look anything like this. For me the important learning part has been the solder practice and to find an option for filling an 'annoying' worm hole.

I will definitely be looking at turning something for the top that, I hope, will match the piece but we shall see. It is definitely remountable although I'm not sure that I would want to spend any more time on detailing it as it really was all about the worm hole! Plenty more worm holed wood where that piece came from to play around with detail!  :-[

This evening I have recovered a display stopper that has cracked and I am going to attempt to fill the crack with some glue and coffee ground and then re-turn a little and bring to a finish. I have also recovered a couple of other stoppers that, now with a little more experience, plan to 'adjust' slightly to see if I can finish them properly!

Happy practice.

Hi Arcos  --  Quite a pleasing design but like Pewter try to use if possible
Lead Free Solder as it will come into contact with the content of the bottle.
