Me and the wife were recently at Castle Howard, and this lathe in the basement of the wing that was gutted by a fire.
It is about 12 feet long and foot powered. It was surrounded by shavings so it looked to me that it had recently been used for a demonstration or something like that. On second thoughts they may have been scattered around for effect. Either way I would have loved a go on it.

Very impressive piece of kit, their likely to have built Castle Howard round it or with it, must be from the year . (dot) was that from 1699 .. wonder if Mr Howard used it at anytime !!

Shavings are almost a red herring, things don't look to have moved for a long time.

Les, you'd need to extend the shop to fit it in ..   ;D ...
