Spalted alder-burr bowl.
« on: January 26, 2014, 05:50:54 PM »
I've had this piece of alder in the workshop for a few months, waiting for the right customer to come along and on Saturday I took and order for turned items from an oak furniture shop; they want items to compliment their furniture in the showroom.

The bowl was a pig to turn! In places, the spalting was cracking and coming away in chunks, so lots of ca glue was used to stabilise some areas. I had wanted to put a wide, under-cut rim, but the wood simply wouldn't take the fine edge that I wanted, without breaking away. Maybe, one day, my gouge skills will be up to it, but for now, they're not.

The bowl is 12" diameter x 5" deep, so a good size, and it's finished with 2 coats of sanding sealer topped off with micro-crystaline wax.

Comments and criticisms always welcome...Les

Les,

A lovely classic form made from an underused timber - Alder.

It will look stunning with a few fruits in it on a dining table.

It does not look as bad as you describe so I can only imaging how well you've worked to hold it together and hide the unwanted imperfections. Your CA bill must be getting quite large by now!

Hi Les, one beautiful, stunning piece of Alder, classic form and a finish that will standup to a showroom, if it does which it says on the tin.

Well done and on hitting pay dirt, hope you're getting a good price.

What a great looking bowl, and I think your gouge skills are far greater than your stating

Hi Ed...thanks for that...my gouge skills have come on a long, long way over the last year, but they weren't up to this. I shattered the rim 3 times and had to cut it back each time by several mm. In the end, I had to settle for using heavy scraper to take the last few mm off all of the inside of the bowl.
