Bowls
« on: April 10, 2014, 03:29:38 AM »
Here is a fourteen inch sugar maple bowl and a smaller elm faceted bowl on a cherry dish. I'm trying to use simple pyrography to add interest.
Severe critics and comments are welcomed.
Thanks

Somehow, Sevilla, I don't think that will be necessary! There really isn't much to be too critical about - the form is fine, the finish is something to be proud of and the pyrography embellishments are subtle enough so as not to distract from the beauty of the wood. All-in-all I'd say it's pretty darned good!

Sevilla,

I did not have to try and remember you, your pyro work and the use of that delicate little flower (what is it?) is distinctive and apparently your signature. Stick with it, I like it.

The large bowl (bottom pic) is a classic form but you don't give any dimensions so it's use as a fruit bowl or similar is guesswork.

The Platter is attractive but the up-pointed inner rim looks like it would get damaged very easily, might have been better to make it smaller and more rounded.

The dish (on the platter) took me a moment, you've squared off the edges, I'm not sure if I can count 10 or 12 edges. The shape is well defined if not to my taste - the lop is a little too long. But again the edgework and pyro-work manage to give it a life of it's own which make it attractive.

Overall I'd definitely say well done.

Sevilla, three delightful and beautiful forms, love the Sugar Maple, nice size at 14" too.

Were's the spoon .. when it's a dish & bowl it's missing ..  ;) .. like the bowls rim and the pyrography is all it needs, could be Colonial forms.

Thank you all. I really appreciate every comment and it is my opinion that one grows in any field only after serious criticism, positive or negative.
I was afraid that that the pyrography on the sugar maple bowl, that in my opinion has beautiful waves of dark and clear wood could detract from the wood pattern although I tried to follow the wood pattern.
The smaller bowl is about 5 inch in diameter was colored at the bottom. Here is another picture that highlight the coloring.
Thanks again.

All good the pyro doesn't impose on the either piece, so for  they are both winners

Sevilla,

I think I've noted before, your available timbers say you are in America.

But can I ask, what is the little plant you pyro into your work, it's very delicate and you do it beautifully.
