Large functional bowl in alder burr.
« on: April 13, 2014, 09:46:53 PM »
i made this in response to a request from a shop to have a big, functional bowl that had all the gutsy, natural features that my recent batch of alder had, yet remained functional - so now big holes right through this one!

Apologies for the photos....it's too wide for my little photo-tent, so i had to photograph it in the garden, but the white cloth that I used seems to be causing a bluish hue on the bowl.

It's 14" diameter x 4" deep and has been finished with 3 coats of Danish oil, then buffed and waxed with micro-crystaline wax

C&C welcome....Les

Hi Les

Nicely proportioned functional bowl, lovely piece of timber well finished. I also like the rim, a nice feature without taking away the rustic look of the bowl.
The finishing touch is the artistic way in which you pyrograph the letters and the logo on the base, really sets it off.

Regards
Rod

Question? How do you sign the bottom....

Hi Ed....my usual method is to mark a two concentric pencil-lines whilst the piece is still on the lathe. Then I remove the piece from the lathe and place it on the workbench, then hand-write the inscription in pencil, rotating it so that the writing always radiates from the centre. When I'm happy with the layout I pyrograph it with a 2mm ball-tip. I find this to be a good all-purpose tip that suits a range of timbers and grain directions. Finally, I remount it on the lathe and (lightly) sand away the pencil marks.

Well you have met all the commission requirements on this one and its a real beauty. The Alder burr puts above the functional and into a decor range, yet still has its original function available. Nice one, gets my vote.
