FLOTSAM JETSAM
« on: April 25, 2014, 02:19:37 PM »

Tony gave me a bowl save to play with which he cut up for an idea I had of waves cascading on a beach.  I went for a
textured white finish to give it a abstract view, I did try a bowl  wire brushed and bleached for a driftwood effect but it did
not give enough contrast. Tony suggested a shipwreck (flotsam).  So he made me this piece from walnut which I textured
  and coloured.

My immediate thought on opening this up was the Sidney Opera House LOL. Whatever I see in it I like it. Love the contrast in textures and the use of the 'discard.' You do well together

Di,

I can see the waves but because they are so regularly aligned I can also see why the Sydney Opera House figures so highly in peoples thoughts but I guess you've worked that out.

As ever, you've seen beyond the norm and produced another outstanding sculptural piece.

I love it, can't believe how deep the texturing is on the bowl but it contrasts well with the waves. the colours work aswell. :) :)

Hi Toni & Di

Lovely work again, I like the teturing and colours you've used. Is it finished in metallic? or matt & laquered?
I go along with the opera house theme.

Rod

Bryan  Thank you for seeing the waves in there abstract.  ;D ;D

John   The texturing was done deeply to give more depth when coloured.

Rod    It was coloured with normal acrylic paints and finished with acrylic laquer.
I was looking for a definite contrast from the rest of the piece.

The third picture highlights a discrepancy in the forms for the waves, it's only the very top one that centers on the bowl, everything is right with this piece, stunning.

Reading into your title: Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo ... Jetsam is part of a ship, its equipment, or its cargo that is purposely cast overboard or jettisoned to lighten the load in time of distress and that sinks or is washed ashore.

One very nice piece to get one's hands on ..  ;) ..

The form represents the randomness of natural wave patterns, they never roll/crash in the same and can vary greatly.
