olive
« on: April 27, 2014, 01:46:57 PM »

Tony asked me to put these on for him. the vase and small H/F are Burr Olive.  The bowl is olive.A question  as any one out
there any tips on drying Olive.  Tried all sorts of ideas. Some pieces have been rough turned about 2 years ago and stored but they
are still very heavy and wet. Other logs left out in the elements and others under cover.   At the moment trying boiling with soap.

  The Bowl is 9insw 4ins h   The Vase is 7ins h    The H/F 5ins

Di,

Olive is a very oily wood, are you sure the wet feeling is not the oil instead of a water content?

That said, boiling in soap may make an oil/soap emulsion and bring some of it out but that is just a guess. The only couple of times I've turned it I found the oil content a boon to the glide of the tool over the timber and looking at the 3 pieces you've posted I'd say Tony found the same thing.

Great wood to work.

Bryan     Tony agrees it is a great wood to work with. ;D  He has a lot of root and has found that when rough turned
it distorts and cracks very easy.  Checked the boiler and there is a lot of froth on the top which did not
happen when we used plain water.  Could just be the soap though. ???

If ever proof were needed that timber with a wildly figured grain benefits from the simple, understated design of the pieces that are made from it, then here is that proof.
All three pieces are beautiful and the shapes let the timber do all the talking.

Hi Di
Thanks for posting these for Tony. A lovely selection turned from one of my favourite timbers but sorry no tips for drying it. The two grooved rings set the bowl off nicely in the first photo. the hollow form and vase look great as they are.

Hi Rod and Les.     Thank you for your comments   Tony wanted me to put these on because of the Burr which is
something not often seen on Olive.   Tonys refused to take further lessons on posting. He says
                                its my job

Three very nice pieces, like the detail to the top one, the HF speaks volumes, on need for embellishments there, now the vase we can at times all read/see things .. is that be Dougal & Zebedee or just Time for Bed ..

Thought it was just us seeing things .     I see a Afghan Hound  or  Dougal   and a  Gremlin .
Tony sees Woolly Monkeys.    I also saw the sea in a platter posted by les but I don't think any one else did.

Well if we are spotting things - is that a butterfly in the Olive Vase?

Odd .. the top bowl has the Old Cowboy character .. who's it .. big floppy hat, large eyes and nose, with big black flowing mustache... not thinking of BHT ...
