More burr
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:48:39 AM »
As I have got my hands on rather  lot of oak burr I am doing a few bits with it each week. This bowl / platter is 320mm diameter and 65mm high. Lots of figuring and natural splits. I'll wait for it to settle before seeing whether to fill some or not. Very dry, no shavings, just chips that find places I didn't know I had LOL.

Hi Pete....that's a lovely piece of burr, will be interesting to see how you finish it.

p.s. ... if you need any help looking for those woodchips, sorry, but I'm busy that day :)

I have got my hands on about 50 pieces of burr of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Not usually a bowl maker but most of it is too thin to make much else. Oh well. Guess I'll have to make do LOL.

Thanks for the thought Les. I reckon that the chips will be best left to my own looking LOL. If the wood opens up a lot I'll probably fill with brass but otherwise I'll leave as is. Oak is very sound even when split as sen in some of the old oak beams in houses.

50 bit's of Burr, has your wood fairy been visiting again?

This is lovely looking, I'm definitely with David, oil it.

I'll ask the question I always ask, that big bit of bark, have you secured it with lots of CA, I'd hate to see it fall off.

Thanks guys. A friend has been sorting out his workshop and getting his lathe (a Wadkin RS1632) sorted. He is only interested in turning large pieces e.g. 4' diameter and upwards so asked me to take all the smaller stuff. How could I refuse.

The bark has had a load of CA glue poured down the back of it so hopefully it will stay intact.

Hi Pete
A lovely burr again, simple practical design, :'( crying out for 5 or 6 coats of danish oil I think (outside ), foodsafe inside?

That is a very pleasing, easy on the eye, bowl Pete.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?
