ICE FIELD
« on: May 19, 2014, 08:19:22 PM »

This is a collaboration between the two of us. 50/50.  Tony wanted to do an ice field so after discussing it we came up with this idea.
Tony had a heck of a lot of spalted hornbeam pen blanks which he made into the ice field, but even after bleaching I thought it looked
too busy, so we textured and coloured it to give it a cool look, Tony made me the H/F which I textured and coloured  again looking
 for a cold look,
but to contrast with the field there was still something missing so Tony made the icicle out of pewter which I lightly
textured  and coloured  (we then put it in the freezer over night for effect)  ;D ;D ;D
 the H/F is 5insx2ins
                                           Comments welcome  Tony and Di

Okay, so I'm seeing Superman's Fortress of Solitude here. Where it sprouts up out of the ice as the long crystals.

The bringing together of the 'Cool' look hollowform, pewter icicle with the angled pen-blank ice-field is an inspiration. It certainly gels together to create the illusion required by the title.

It's funny, Superman was my first thought too!!

Great and interesting work as always. I like the way you always set a scene with your work, rather than just another hollow form.

Now a look at the pictures and I'd the idea the base was corian, not pen blanks until I'd read the details, did have a lot and better use too.

There is .. and why' ... ICE AGE ..   ;D ... pops up..

One stunning cool piece, excellently thought out as always by you both.. just a small down side, the icicle doesn't look quite right, it's normal for them to be tapered.

Excellent. I love pieces you can weave a story around. It adds a whole new dimension to the work.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Yep, Les, we need to look pass the mindset ..  Shard is the more ideal word and the image being taken as the main body has passed through/lodged in the surface.

Well that's taken me by surprise  don't quite know what to say Guys....Thank you all for your kind words and positive input,
which as been extremely encouraging....I often wonder how our pieces will be received as often we get carried away with
        our abstract thoughts and ideas.

I don't know about the others, But I for one am quite jealous of your ability to constantly collaborate and bounce ideas off each other, it develops some wonderful thoughts and creative pieces.

For me and many others woodturning is a solo pastime.
