« on: May 30, 2014, 04:38:04 PM »
i made this cake stand late last year and forgot to take pics and post here, its made from Elm,Ebony and Purpleheart. The lower tier is 12 1/2" wide, the middle tier is 9 1/2" wide and the top tier is 7 1/2" wide, the base under the lower tier is 4" across, the stands total height is 19 1/2",the rounded edges of the three tiers have ben hollowed to make it lighter and each tier is 2-4 mm thick including the hollowed edges. The uprights have been threaded so it can be taken apart for storage, cheers,Eric.

Eric,

It looks totally wrong - a cake stand without cakes, come on!

But I can't fault the turning, in fact I rather like the ring at the top for picking it up. If possible any chance of a close up of that area to see the way you've connected it all together please.

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

It would go down well at the Ritz as said above but would be improved with better finishing.

Something like a layer of cupcakes would do it.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Graham, the lower tier got a bit thin,ie; 1 mm,so didn`t dare do anymore sanding or it would have gone through, actualy went through in one spot, hence the piercing in 3 places to hide the hole, the rest of it is finished perfectly,Eric.

I wasn't really suggesting that there was anything wrong with the finish Eric, merely that a cake stand needs cakes on it :)

Eric, I like the combination of the timbers, the well thought out layout and detail... being threaded it's just like great-grandma's ... now the fancies ... more a cream cake/chocolate eclair man .. ;) ..
