Open segment candlesticks
« on: June 23, 2013, 01:07:21 PM »
This pair of candlesticks use holly, purple heart and pau amarello. The top and base are pewter which I have spun to the shapes seen. The height of each candlestick is 130mm and the pewter top is 100mm diameter. As always, comments appreciated. Malcolm.

Hi Malcy,

One pair of incredible pieces, such detail, each ring differs in segment width, or only the bottom and top two rows, what do they vary in size.

Only the top left solid ring is different in the grain direction.  Should light a cold dark night nicely.

Thank you for sharing.

David

Hi Malcy...It's not very often that I'm held in awe by segmented work, but this pair of candlesticks (candlestands?) is quite an exception. I find that much of the segmented work that we see is over-fussy, with a mix of timber species that seem to be chosen to highlight the segmentation, but these three timbers sit together fairly comfortably. I'm in awe of your patience.....how long did it take?

Thanks for your comments, guys. The wood in each is in 146 pieces, so I am guessing about 15 hours each. The top and bottom halves have to be made separately for turning the inside, and then joined together to turn the outside. The pewter top and bottom are quite quick once the tools and forming mandrels are made. Malcolm.

Hi. These are  beautiful. Can you tell me where you get the base and tops from. Thanks John

There is a lot of work gone into those, well worth it, they are spectacular.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I can admire the skill, work and patience that has gone into making these even though they aren't quite to my taste. Doesn't stop me envying you all three attributes.

I'm captivated by people that have the drive to create these segmented items. Haven't got the patience for it myself, so pleased to see someone posting them.

Interesting take on a set of candlesticks and most unusual hardware.
