Horse chestnut platter
« on: November 09, 2014, 03:28:59 PM »
This one took a little turning - 23" diameter from horse chestnut with plenty of ripple figure and the odd bits of burr too. It was difficult to get a clean cut with the figuring but I got there in the end!

A lovely, classic form  -  un-fussy, so as to show the timber at its best, and what  fine piece of timber.

Very nice big platter , I often use Horse chestnut and really like the results , it spalts nicely and quickly and also takes stains well but I rarely do that . It is a pretty useless wood for anything else though ! which means it can often be obtained cheaply ( free )

I gotta say, thats impressive.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Paul,

I hate to think just how hard it is to turn a 23" platter. Not something I think I'll every try,

Nice to see though.

Paul,

I hate to think just how hard it is to turn a 23" platter. Not something I think I'll every try,

Nice to see though.

i have some that size and bigger in walnut so i'll see how tricky they are for myself soon. a 19" brown oak was fiddly when i got down to 4-5mm but i don't think i'll take the walnut to that level.

nice platter by the way.

Great job, Paul. Like the wood and finish. Very well turned especially when you consider the size. Malcolm.
