Maple burl bowl
« on: November 29, 2014, 10:10:59 PM »
Here is a maple burl bowl with black walnut lid. Bowl is 8 x 5 inch.
There are only two coats of food grade linseed oil. Personally I do not care for too shiny finishes except for purely decorative items.
C and C welcome.

 8) .. I do like this piece, stunning detailed Maple, voids & all, and contrast in Black Walnut, nice touch of the matching Maple knob. I've thoughts on coring the knob from the main body should I get back to making boxes or any lidded form, no end of possibility with design.

Nice size piece and well finished.  Cheers for sharing.   David

Sevilla,

This piece is a demonstration of the balance of the natural defects in wood with the detail that can be produced from clean timber.

The cracks that have developed naturally, the dip where the bark has come away all show the wood as a living substance, then that very well shaped lid and a knob to match the bowl bring it all to a balance.

You've done very well on this piece, it balances very well in shape and design.

Thats a very nice shape, and a lovely bit of wood.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Sevilla....what a belter. The spalted maple is just wonderful and you've found a harmonious match in the colour of the lid; the wrong wood for the lid could have ruined it, but this works really well.
