Thanks both.
I did use a parting tool, thought a bit of sanding would do the job. Ouch, no. Must try using the spindle gauge but also leaving enough room to part off.
The inside doesn't follow the outside and has a slight radius but think the foto may not do it any favours as there is a bit of sanded torn grain which reflects the light differently to the surface above and the base. Need to practice and improve tool sharpening and technique,got to try these things to learn from..

Thanks also for your thoughts on wood id any other views welcome?
